LONDON PRIDE - a docuseries depicting ordinary civilians responding to extraordinary circumstances in and around London during moments (or eras) of heightened nationalism or regional pride.
Episode 1 of the series titled “Walworth on Fire” is based on the memoirs of the Rev. John G Markham, Rector of St Peter’s Church in Walworth and regional Air Raid Warden. It depicts the bombing of St Peter’s Church on 28 October 1940 that killed 70 and seriously injured 200 sheltering in its crypt. A major incident in London at the time, the episode documents a 24 hour span – including the events leading up to, during, and following the bombing of the crypt. In a time typically marked by great statesmen and gallant military exploits, this is a story on the brink of extinction … an extraordinary local tale of those who stayed at home, fought for home, and died from home. It documents the ordinary people involved and their responses to this significant event.
