Julip
A short film by Lisa Deborah Christen
Screenwriter, Director, Producer
SYNOPSIS
On the surface, JULIE is an attractive woman in her thirties that has it all - a relationship with a physically attractive man, an expensive house in Chelsea, a thriving career, and plenty of money to spend.
GEORGE, on the other hand, is a simple-minded man in his forties - scraping by as a street performer, living alone in a humble studio flat in Hackney, and is perceived as poor, small and pitiable by the socio economic elite.
But beneath the surface, JULIE is stuck in a loveless relationship - leaving her self-conscious, valueless, and empty. GEORGE, however, celebrates the little things in life, sees the best in people, and is naively optimistic about the future and world.
This is a tale about their improbable encounter and the discovery that what's really valuable in life is never bought - but often discovered in unpredictable ways.
CHARACTERS
JULIE, in her thirties, is a successful creative director at a high-end advertising agency. She is wealthy and lives with her photographer boyfriend, KEVIN, in a nice house in Chelsea. On the surface she has it all but beneath she is stuck in a loveless relationship leaving her professionally and socially driven but personally hopeless and unfulfilled.
GEORGE, in his fourties, is a humble street performer who works as a living statue close to JULIE'S home, on her route to work. He is a simple but joyful sort, kind to all, and grateful for the little things in life. He lives alone in a modest studio flat in Hackney, with limited furnishings, material possessions, and wealth. On the outside, he is pitiable by those who equate happiness with possessions but on the inside he is full of peace, joy, and gratitude.
KEVIN, in his 40s, is JULIE'S photographer boyfriend. He travels a lot for his shoots, so he is often not at home or comes home late. KEVIN is superficial, egocentric, and self-serving. He values JULIE only in so much as she provides him with status (trophy girlfriend) and financial security. He treats her poorly as a result.
